But what exactly is a Doula and what does she do?
The doula is a non medical figure that attends to the prenatal care of women, she is there as support during childbirth and the postpartum period. A doula is primarily emotional support to mother and father, but also helps parents to focus on their experience with greater equanimity.
Some functions of the Doula:
Counseling during pregnancy;
Clarification of medical procedures and interventions;
Exercise and physical suggestions to make pregnancy and childbirth more comfortable for the woman;
Help in preparing a birth plan;
An advocate for the needs of the pregnant woman in labor and caregiver support;
Suggests positions for women during labor and delivery;
Support and involvement of partners during labor and delivery;
Help to avoid unnecessary interventions;
Promotes and supports breastfeeding;
Suggestsions to help you handle the baby during the first weeks;
She is present until the parents are no longer in need of her services;
Emotional support.
But above all, a Doula can listen and empathize with parents helping them serenely approach the wonderful experience of birth.
